Is it normal for the outside unit of the heat pump to freeze over every time it ices/snows/sleets? I live in NC so that doesn't happen often but when it does it freezes my outside unit up. Im not sure how old my unit is. We bought the house a few years ago. It is an older house.

Heat pumps do not work when the temperature is below 32. They will freeze up. Set your thermostat to "Emergency Heat" when the temperature is below 32. That will prevent it from freezing up. I hate my heat pump!!!! Never again!!!!

Your heat pump my have a faulty defrost timer on it. Heat pumps will start to freeze up but what ever the time it set to it will go into defrost mode around every thirty to up to ninety minutes.
I would have this checked out first. The only fix for it would be to replace the board as it is an electronic circuit board.

The unit shouldn't freeze up due to being low on freon unless it is in cooling mode.

2 problems could cause this, first low pressure due to a leak or low ambient temperatures and 2nd lack of air flow thru the unit

An ice accumulation on the outside condenser coils usually indicates low freon pressure. Time to call the man and have him check it.
