DO NOT STOP YOUR MEDICATION! Call the baby's pediatrician to check about the medication. Almost every medication is excreted in breast milk. I know the dentist said it was safe, and most likely it is, but a pediatrician SPECIALIZES in medicine for infants;therefore the pediatrician would know best.
In the meantime, do you give your baby vitamins with iron? Sometimes iron can be the culprit. Again, check with the pediatrician. You also might want to substitute one feeding with 4 ounces of warm nursery water with a teaspoon of white Karo syrup stirred into it. That will move the baby's bowels. This is an old fashioned remedy that has been used for generations safely, but again, check with your pediatrician.

Do not give a suppository without a drs order!!!! try 3/4 of a tablespoon of warm prunejuice then nurse as much as possible.... the best laxative for a baby is breastmilk.... good luck I know how hard it is to see your little one in distress. I have a 5 month old little girl and had the same problem when I was forced to place her on formula...

Clindamycin is moderatly safe but there are many safer antibiotics, maybe ask for a different prescription:
http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/aap-approved-meds.html
However unless the stools are coming out hard she isn't constipated babies strain when they poop sometimes, it's perfectly normal.
"Hard, pellet - like, presence of blood or mucous
This is constipation in a breastfed baby and is so very rare that I cannot recall ever seeing it in a baby who is receiving breastmilk as a sole source of nutrition, as are most babies in the first six months. It could be related to a food allergy. Formula fed babies get constipated much more often and may even have harder bigger stools like older kids and adults. Getting these stools softer is a balancing act of great proportions. "
http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/pediatricks/poop.asp
"Even if a baby is strictly breast-fed, the frequency of stooling varies among infants. While a frequent stool is most common, babies may stool only one time every other day and still be completely normal. Constipation in fact refers not only to the frequency of stools, but also to the consistency. Therefore, if an infant poops every third day but it comes out soft, this would not be considered constipation, and no therapy is indicated. In fact, at 3-6 weeks of age, breast-fed babies may only have one stool a week. This is because breast milk leaves very little waste in the intestines to be passed. Again, if the stool, when passed, is not hard, this is completely normal. In general, it is almost impossible for strictly breast-fed babies to become constipated."

Its common for a breastfed baby to have fewer BM's. At first they seem to have one after every feed, but eventually they can space apart to once a week. What are the signs that she is constipated? does she seem to be in pain? An antibiotic can sometimes cause abdominal pain in mother and baby...but this is temporary...o tooth infection is nothing to fool around with either! Maybe ask for a dose that will be done in like 5 days instead of the usual 10. The important thing is to read your baby...is she just not going to the bathroom as often? then thats OK....but if she seems like shes really in pain, or BM is hard, then you can ask for a different antibiotic.

Don't give her suppositories as they can become depend an them to move theri bowels. First try a little dark kayro syup in her bottle either with some milk or a little warm water. She may not want to take the water so try giving her some breast milk. Or you can try diluted prune juice. It could be the medicine but also review your diet to make sure that your not eating anything that would upset her tummy. The syrup will work it worked with my son everytime!

you may want to stop the medication temporarily to see what the cause is first before you give her anything. i had the same problem with my girl a week ago. find the cause adn once you do that, then you can find the best solution. if you find that its nothing outside of the ordinary like ur med or formula (if ur supplementing iron formulas can cause bad constipation)...then i would suggest giving her water to keep her hydrated adn then give her a lil of the apple prune juice made by gerber. worked like a charm on my baby girl whos 5 weeks old...we had a poop explosion on the couch after a day of giving her a juice...just make sure u dont give her more than 4 oz in 24 hours as their stomachs arent used to this kind of nutrition yet. good luck!

I was advised from a nurse to do leg exercises with my little girl at 3 weeks when she seemed to be having a bit of constipation. Move her legs like she was riding a bicycle, it helps. Helped my baby anyways, but if it is a big problem, contact the doctor.

NO. If you start giving your little one suppositories you'll get her dependant on them!!
It's normal for babies to grunt as they have a bowel movement. As long as her stool is loose (about the consistancy of mustard for breastfeed babies) and she's having around 1 day at this age, it's fine. Breastfed babies VERY RARELY get constipated or get diarrhea. It's one more reason to breastfeed!
