My choice: Toshiba, hands down!!
Why?: Because they are very reliable! I've seen one of their laptops go strong for 8+ years and have personally used one for 4+ years. Industrial use, day and night, non-stop, and they work like a charm. They don't let you down. And let me tell you, when a computer lets you down, you don't forget the associated misery! ;)

The answer to this question is not as simple as you think. To be honest with you, both make quality computers at the high end. And both make really crappy computers at the low end. The decision as to what computer to buy is mainly about what you are going to use it for. Toshiba makes some incredibly reliable top end machines called Tecra's. The Satalite line however are not that great. They are fairly cheaply made. The same goes for HP, though usually for the money you pay for the low end computer, you can get more features on the HP than on the Toshiba Satalite. The main thing that you want to do when you buy a laptop, is make sure to get the extended warranty that is offered. For instance, buy the computer at a Best Buy or Circuit City, or Comp USA. These stores offer really good 3 year extended warranties for the laptops they sell. The warranty is going to cost you, but it is well worth it. Good Luck
