Because capitalism is based on the premise of exploitation. The only way for capitalism to work is there has to be poor people that motivate the middle class to work hard. The food banks are means of support for the poor people.

Your question is kind of a tautology. America is rich, therefore it can afford to have food banks and shelters. And while there is poverty, America is not in denial about it.

Every country is going to have people who fall beneth the cracks.

Some people fail to benefit from our riches. Sometimes that because of poor choices or mental illness. Sometimes it is due to unfortunate and unforeseeable circumstances. In any event, the fact that we are rich makes us more able and interested in helping those in need. We have excess food and a willingness to share. That is not a bad thing.

My friend, it's because the wealth of nation is not what it has, but what it's people are capable of. Labor is the true wealth of a nation. The concept of rich, when, applied at the macro level is fleeting. There are people who need food banks and shelters because their individual situations have resulted in trying circumstance. I for one feel proud that this nation has food banks and shelters available as saftey nets for those who need one. I consider these institutions economic hospitals.

At least we have them. People can get food/shelter/medical in this country no matter what. In other countries you will not necessarily get any of the above. We have food banks and shelters because we are rich.

the reason we are the the richest in the world is because we do not place a roof on wealth. there are incredible wealthy people because the gov't reduces taxes as you get richer.

the thing about the U.S. is that there is no roof but there is also no floor on how poor you can get. most countries tax rich and gives to the poor. the U.S. does not do this as much

Because people who are not productive and who do not produce anything tend not to have any income with which to pay rent and buy food. Not a difficult concept, so I don't understand your confusion.
