Ok, I'm having the same problem as you, but I'll try my best to help you out. I just turned 14, 9th grade, 5'9-5'10. 140lb.
1) Yea, protein shakes are really good. I've been doing those for the past 4 months, and I gained like 12 pounds in the first 2-3 weeks. The only problem about protein shakes is, you need to work out about 30 minutes after you drink them. If you constantly just drink them and don't work out, you will put on fat instead of muscle. Assuming you got a body shape like me (long arms and legs, lanky) you probably don't want to buff up, but just put on enough weight to be more athletic. As far as food, just stick to the food pyramid, and eat more Meats, Eggs, Poultry than they reccomend. Yogurt and ice cream is good for weight too.
2) For improving your game, u'll have to look at other answers on your page because I was wondering the same thing. I would reccomend using drills you can find on the internet, or from your coach.
3) For basketball, you don't need to lift a whole lot of weights. Free weights like 15 or 20 pounds will help with arm strength. Squats with weights could help with leg and calf strength (ask your school coach before you start). Situps will help with core.
4)At my age I'm too young to start doing squats w/ weights, or any weights that build up leg muscles, but I use these things called Jumpsoles. The standard set costs like $69.95 and they work really well. My first one weeks of using them I gained like 2 or 3 inches in my vertical, and they helped with quickness as well. I drunk a protein shake (see above) before I did these so my results were probably faster than others. If you wanna check these out go to "www.jumpusa.com". The price is kinda high but trust me it's worth it.
***The most efficient way to getting better at basketball is putting all your time in it, and loving the game.

To seriously answer this you'll need more than Yahoo Answers, but I'll give you a brief answer.
To gain weight you'll need more than protein shakes, you'll also have to go to the gym about 3 days a week, one day for arms, another for chest, another for legs. Eat good whole foods like chicken breast, wild rice, lean beef, oatmeal. Eat small portions, but about 6-7 times a day. It'll take time, especially because you're still young, but you'll get bigger.
That machines that you should use depends on the body type, don't just focus on one part because basketball involves so many parts of the body and verticle leaps get higher as you get bigger, so this means your legs, abs for balance, arms for explosion, so basically your entire body.
Check out www.bodybuilding.com, it's a great site and you'll find any nutritional or weightlifting help there.
I found that I improved my game by playing only at what I was weak at. I had a weak left handed layup, so for weeks whenever I had a chance for a layup, it was with my left hand. If your defense is iffy, get the best defencesive player on your team, watch him play, then do what he does, only with player much better than you. You'll get beat, continually, but soon you'll notice that you lose by less and less, and that you're getting better at D.
Good luck bro; basketball is a great game. I use to play 2 hours everyday no excuses, no that I am done university, I haven't touched a ball in a year....sad, it's a great game.

Play lots of one on one and work on staying down in your defensive stance so you can improve what you are calling "iffy".
For weight training, use military (overhead) press, leg press, hamstring curls, calf press, and triceps extensions.
To get fast, just run alot. Run distances in the offseason so that you build endurance and some leg strength and you will find your speed improved a bit as well. Having good endurance along with good defensive technique gives your coach less reason to take you out.
Work on crossover dribbling. Your shot could probably improve, even though you like your shooting ability. Make sure that you hold your follow through high until the ball hits the basket, especially when you are tired.

1.) Eat protien bars and drink the shakes and lots of PROTIEN healthy food and work out, but weight is mainly genetics and you dont really need it to be a good bball player in high school, plus you'll get bigger as you get older, but my answers for 2 and 3 or whats most important.
2.) Always practice on shooting if you can shoot 60 balls in a row make your goal 90 and try to reach it by the next month. Your short for a bball player so really work on your passing by gettin a good eye view of the court and your teammates, also practice jumping high like MJ and practice shooting the ball in clutch time (but the trick is to treat every minute of the game like its clutch time.) Also watch tapes of the greats like kobe, MJ, Nash, and Dwade, becuase bball is mainly mental, but when you watch these tapes watch all the good things they do and watch all the mistakes they make, because the mistakes that they make can be what you are doing and if you catch these mistakes you can correct them, it also want hurt to get a personal coach and mainly have HEART cause without that the game will never work for you.
3.) To get faster build up strength and muscle in your legs, and run cardio on a treadmill. Also do drills like suicides and sprints.
if you follow these RULES YOU WILL DEFINATLY BE BETTER AT BBALL. HOPE I HELPED YOU ;)
