Spray the pans with oven spray really well and put them in a bag or some sort that you can close tightly. (Zip-loc styles are great.) Leave it for the day and when you come back all you will need is a wash rag to wipe it all off. You won't believe how simple.
You can also put them in a zipped or tied up bag and pour in a cupful of ammonia. Let them sit in your sink overnight (in case it leaks) and by morning the fumes will have taken all of the gunk off for you.
I used to be a caretaker at an apartment complex, and I found the oven cleaner was the best method for me.

I have a GE electric stove. I need to clean and change the drip pans under the burners. The Model# J BS07 H2WW and the Serial # MF147027P. I can t figure out how to get them out? Does the burner part have to come out first? I just purchased the home and I don t have a manual to go too.

The easiest and cheapest way to keep the metal pans clean on a stove top is to cover them with foil.
Take your burner element out and put it in a safe dry place.
Clean your burner pans, with stove cleaner.
Cut your foil in pieces that will allow you a little on the edget to turn under and crease good. Cut the middle cirlce in pie slices to get it to turn under and seal good.
When you put your drip pans back on stove and reattach your burner elements, make sure you do NOT get a piece of foil hung in the element hole. Also make sure you get it clicked in the slot on the drip pan so it will be level for cooking again.

Oven cleaners will ruin them.. There is only ONE way to keep them nice and clean.........Wash them when you use them. Treat them like a pan. Wash them and use an s.o.s. pad on them if needed. You can't let them go until they have burned on crap all over them and expect them to come clean.

My Mom used to wrap them in aluminum foil. Instead of cleaning and scrubbing the pans she just replaced the aluminum foil. Easy.

If you have a self-cleaning oven, try tossing them in the oven before your next cleaning cycle.
