A hook can, in general, be either melodic or rhythmic, and often incorporates the main motif for a piece of music.

Characteristics of a melodic hook include skips in the tonal line; however, details of what makes a tune "catchy" are difficult to describe.

A rhythmic hook can be equally catchy by employing syncopation or other devices, but there are still examples of rhythmic hooks which are very straightforward, such as the first theme in Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

It's finding something in common with the words. And the melody/harmony reflecting what your feeling inside at the time or from the past. Ok I'm making this into a Fortune Cookie Yoda answer. The words are the most important thing to me. Hearing the passion and the harmony between the singer, his/her words and the melody, makes an unforgettable song.

A great hook is usually the melody & the harmony of the song and is really catchy. Something that makes everyone want to sing along. Something soulfull.

It's all of it....and it really depends on what people like in a song.....for me, i love it if it has a beat and lots of percussion.....also....try using a variety of words and don't repeat everything too much......songs about life are cool....like Nickelback does....It's all of it combined...you'll know it's good once you hear it :)
