Invertebrates are organisms without a backbone. The major players would be things like insects (ants, bees, etc.) molluscs (snails, clams, and even octopus), and zooplankton (little critters swept around in lakes and seas).

Contrary to what someone else suggested here, you are not an invertebrate but a vertebrate. That is, unless you happen to have 6 legs, 20 eyes and an appetite for detritus.... :)

Invertebrate is a term that describes any animal without a spinal column. The group includes 97% of all animal species — all animals except those in the Chordate subphylum Vertebrata (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals).

spiders, insects, crustaceans, molluscs.

I dont know what level you're studying at but Invertebrates is not a term you should use in classification - you should tell your teacher this - its bad form to describe something as what it is not - if your teacher asks for a living creature which is an invertebrate you'd have every right to say 'an oak tree'.

an invertebrate is an animal without a backbone - so lots of sea animals like sponges, squid, octopus, jellyfish, coral polyps, snails and worms
also there are lots of invertebrates that live on land - like spiders, beetles, earthworms, butterflies, centipedes, flys, bees, crickets etc.

Any animal without a backbone.

Vertebrae are bones in the spine.

So any animal without bones in the spine is an "invertebrate."

Now think about animals you know of that don't have bones in their spines.
