OKay, I'd like to say all the posters are flat out WRONG... Rihanna is first off a dark-yella bone.... They seem to be getting it wrong. I know you're talking about color within the AFRICAN AMERICAN community. Eva Longoria and the others mentioned aren't black. Okay..dark would be hmmm Seal/ Tyrese k? Brown/Chocolate would be hmm.... Gabrielle Union is a little lighter than the average dark eprson but she IS a good example. caramel would be like Terrence from BET and a straight up yeller bone is like Vanessa Williams
o and flava flav is NOT dark skinned. thats now referred to as black skinned...he still cute to me though :p

Skin is composed of a thin surface layer, the epidermis, and the dermis, which is a thicker layer placed under the epidermis. Interface reflection of skin takes place at the epidermis surface. It is approximately "Psurf=5%" of the incident light independent of its wavelength and the human race. The rest of the incident light (95%) is entering the skin where it is absorbed and scattered within the two skin layers (body reflectance).
The epidermis mainly absorbs light, it has the properties of an optical filter. The light is transmitted depending on its wavelength and the melanin concentration in the epidermis. In the dermis the light is scattered and absorbed. The absorption is mainly due to the content of blood and its ingredients. The optical properties of the dermis are basically the same for all human races. The skin colour is thus determined by the epidermis transmittance, which depends mainly on its melanin concentration, and the blood content of the dermis.

I once heard someone say Halle Berry was brownskin. I was like hell no she ain't, I'm brownskin. She's somewhere in between lightskin and light brownskin. There are differences and white people are not the only ones to make that mistake. Black people are so ignorant and self hating that we do similiar things to other blacks especially if they are on the darker side.
