I got hired as a secret shopper several years ago. It was not all it's cracked up to be. Sure they pay you to do these shopping trips but this is how it works. I live in a small town. The first store they wanted me to go to was 20 miles away. It was an auto parts store. I had to go in and ask them questions about their oil, about their oil filters, about their carburetors and in the end, I had to ask all that and buy a pack of spark plugs instead. I had to pay with my own money-- true they reimbursed me about 2 months later, plus the $5-7 whole dollars that didn't even really cover the gas for my car to get there and the spark plugs weren't even the type for my car so that was useless. You have to photo copy all of your receipts and fill out a huge questionnaire to send along with it along with the salesman's name, etc. before you can get your check that takes 4-6 weeks. It would have been fun if I lived in a big city and got to shop at someplace good but that didn't happen. I quit after my next assignment was over 40 miles away at a Carl's Jr. restaurant and they wanted me to ask tons of questions about the food and then order something else- I wasn't driving 40 miles for Carl's Jr. and after asking so many questions, I was afraid they'd spit in the food I did order. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

It's not as difficult as one would think. Easiest way is to write in to their corporate office expressing an interest in helping them by being one. Don't call those phony numbers (no pun intended) or give anyone money. It's really not that hard to get a gig being a mystery shopper.
