Those are tubers where the asparagus plant stores food & water during periods of drought.

You DID mean the asparagus fern, right? Long, needle-covered fronds with prickles? Very airy & graceful, looks nothing like the vegetable....

What Mona said. Bearded Iris are the same way only theirs is above the ground usually.
