Yeah, that's a trick used by shamans in various places in the world. An egg is often used because it is readily available and dramatic, other objects commonly used are a mudball, a fish, or a stone.
When a person feels themselves in need of cleaning, and they go to a person whose power and authority they trust (a shaman, etc) their subconscous does the rest.
An honest shaman, from Jesus on down to the most obscure brujo, etc, will say as much. That's why Jesus often said, "your faith has healed you"
