choose for our mate, under the asumption that voice wouldn't play a big part because we would have no point of reference to distinguish between the different races.

IF you were starting the world out from the beginning and all were blind, then race issues probably would not be nearly as bad as they are now. No one would know that some folk were white, some yellow, some brown, some black...therefore the 'fear' of seeing someone different than you would not occur.

BUT there are other differences in people that go beyond color of skin - blind people are sensitive to auditory stimuli; to olfactory stimuli and to touch -

Races are about more than color - they are about cultures and rituals and spiritual beliefs and diet - a whole host of things that would make one 'group' different from another.

If we were ALL 'blind from birth' there would be no 'race' because NO ONE could see 'color' ... and if we were all 'deaf from birth' we couldn't tell race from sound, because we coun't hear it. I think that this is a GOOD POINT that you are making ... that we need to go 'voluntarily blind/deaf' and learn to 'listen to our hearts' even more than our heads before we start making ANY decisions that can be 'influenced' by 'race' ... be that our mate or the employer we have and the employees they hire. UNFORTUNATELY, too many people make 'choices' based on 'assumptions' from their early childhood upbringing, so 'racism' is still a problem in the world, no matter WHAT COLOR you are, or what LANGUAGE you speak. And yes, black people can be 'racists' too ... being 'racist' means 'thinking that everyone of another color/race is not as good as I am' no matter what race that 'I' is.

It would probably still play a big part because then you would have the thoughts instilled in you from your parents, friends, etc. So basically it would be what you have been taught since birth. Remember people are not born to be prejudice we are taught it :(

We would perhaps not discriminate on the basis of race since we can't see the skin color. But I have no doubt we'd find something else to be prejudiced about.

Sopranos suck! I hate short people - it sounds like they're talking to my crotch! People who don't exfoliate should be exterminated! And so on.
