Avast paired with Zonealarm Firewall. Both are free and excellent especially for new computer users. God Bless.

get avira anti-vir personal edition it is the best free antivirus and has the best detection rates out of the 3 free av's avg is 82% avast at 88% and avira anti-vir personal edition at 94% i have used this for a long time and no problems yet. it is better than norton because it doesnt hog youre system resources
http://www.free-av.com/
Avira offers: 1.Extensive Malware Recognition of viruses, Trojans, backdoor programs, worms, etc. 2.Automatic incremental updates of antivirus signatures, engine and entire software 3.Permanent virus protection, with Virus Guard real time monitoring 4.Install and configuration in just a couple of steps, setup to protect your PC in minutes 5.Virus protection against known and unknown threats, using an advanced heuristic system 6.Scheduler where you can set the scanner to make automatic virus scans or updates on your system 7.Forum and phone support
also get spyware terminator, it has real time monitoring and automatic updates, it is also very low on system resources and best of all it's free and not on the rogue spyware list. you can get it from http://www.spywareterminator.com/... i have used it for a long time it has HIPS, Real time shield, and if you want an integrated real time monitor from clam win antivirus. also a right click scan for windows explorer
you should also scan youre computer ocasionaly with spybot search and destroy http://www.download.com/3000-8022-101221... and ad-aware personal http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
again all these are free and i have used them for a long time and have used many av's including avast and avg and by far avira antivir is the best

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!
AVG by Grisoft is definitely NOT "The Best". Unfortunately one of the things it is not the best at, is doing what is is supposed to do, detecting viruses!
In short, AVG is crap!
In test,
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
after test,
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
after test,
http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/gr/avgfree.htm
after test ,
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=891307&postcount=1,
after test,
http://www.pcworld.com/article/124475-1/article.html ,
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam. AVG has proven itself to be a mediocre performer at best. Absolutely crappy at worst. Missing almost 20%, when trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG = Average, at best!
There are much better free alternatives, such as Avast, Active Virus Shield, and Avria Anti-Vir.
I like best the AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Honestly, I don't even know if you need one nowadays. The last thing even remotely close to a virus I've had in the past two years was a little .exe that prevented task manager from open through ctrl-alt-del. Unless you habitually download files (especially exe's) of questionable veracity, you probably don't need any virus protection.
