It seems like most color laser printers are not phot printers?

The reason is because you need ink to reproduce good photo quality. Laser printers use toner which is a fine plastic dust.
Color laser pritners can print good pictures, but nothing that will rival a photo ink printer.

A few years back ALPS had a dry ink sublimation printer that used ribbons and was supposed to rival an ink based printer. It never really took off.

The better you want a picture to be the more supplies you have to use. Magicolor's are nice Color Laser printers, but regardless ink printers are still the industry standard for picture printing. We have several monochrome and color laser printers, in addition to ink printers at the univeristy I support. I have yet to see a color laser printer reproduce the same result that a 6 color ink-based printer can.

I would recommend an HP printer only because they are easier and cheaper to service. Every laser printer, whether color or monocrome will eventually need feed and pickup rollers, a fuser replacement, and a charging roller replacement.

Also keep in mind that the image drum and image transfer belt are separate in color laser printers. So in addition to the toner you must replace these every 20,000 - 50,000 pages.

Check out the Konica Minolta Magicolor 2430DL. It is fantastic. It even has a PictBridge input at the front for digital cameras so equipped. This model also has a built in network card.
I have had one now for about a year and love it. You may be able to pick one up for well under $400.00 (I picked one up for $289.00)
4,500 page refills for all 4 colors are as low as $120.00
