I found some the other day.

When was it found where?

The ancient Incas called it tears of the sun.

People have known about gold since before recorded history began.

There have been many gold rushes throughout the centuries. I live in California.

California's begain in 1848, but is most closely associated with the year 1849. The irony is that there wasn't that much gold. The people who got rich were merchants like Levi Strauss, who sold jeans and other supplies to would-be gold hunters. President Polk and others popularized the gold strike to encourage anglo immigration into California, so that when it came time to vote on statehood (California had just been acquired from Mexico by the US in the Mexican/American War) there would be an anglo majority in the territory.

The first gold rush in California took place in Southern California in March of 1842. It was found by Francisco Lopez in San Feliciano Caynon near present day Newhall.

The big strike took place in the mill race of John Sutter's new sawmill in Coloma on January 24th 1848 the first gold was found by John Marshall, Sutters construction supervisor.

There are a number of gold rushes both before and after these two. The first one is just a little know side show to the other. I hope that the one you want is the one in Coloma.
