Terrorism is a highly emotive subject but the perception of risk is greatly exaggerated compared to the reality, at least in the West.
In the UK, for instance, the London bombings on 7 July 2005 killed 52 people and injured 770. Deaths in road traffic accidents in the UK, however, run at an average of 3500 per year, but because for the most part people are being killed one at a time, here and there, all over the country, nobody except government statisticians and relatives of the victims really pays much attention to RTA casualties. In the USA, the 9/11 attacks killed 2,973 people. RTA deaths in the USA are roughly 42,000 per year, with over three million injuries per year. This means that since 9/11 roughly 265,000 Americans have died in road accidents, nearly 100 times the 9/11 fatalities.
Terrorist attacks are shocking precisely because they are so unusual and violent, but the truth is it is very unlikely that you as an individual will be killed or injured in one. You are much more likely to die in a road accident. The threat is real but not as great as people tend to assume.
If we are serious about protecting ourselves from terrorism then we need to remove the root causes of terrorism - typically poverty, oppression and insecurity. Terrorism grows in areas where a significant proportion of the population feel unable to take any effective non-violent action to change their lot. As an example, the ANC was founded in 1912 to agitate for democratic change in South Africa. The SA government promptly took no action except to arrest their leadership and fire on peaceful demonstrations, until the ANC began their armed campaign in 1962 because they saw no other way of achieving their aims. Armed force might suppress terrorism for a while, but only political change will eliminate it permanently.

There will always be a threat from terrorism but in terms of the chances that one will be a victim of terrorism this is minute.
You stand a far higher chance of being killed crossing the road than of being killed by terrorists.
The trouble for the Labour control freaks is that they couldn't use the danger from crossing the road as an excuse to reduce your personal freedoms and rights.

In my opinion there is very little, if any, threat to us. Much of the threat is overblown and exaggerated by those in goverment who wish to push their liberty-inhibiting bills through so that they can reduce our freedoms and have greater control over our everyday lives.
I was travelling on the tube on the morning of 7/7 on my way to work, and had no hesitation in getting back on as soon as I needed to. The odds of being killed by an act of terrorism is something similar to winning the lottery jackpot every week of the year, and it would be even greater if we didn't have that muppet Bliar as the leader of our government.

Sheila Jackson Lee made a ludicrous assessment. there is not any lively Christian terrorism. easily there is not any proportionate assessment to Muslim extremism which numbers interior the loads of thousands. how many human beings are worried approximately Christians boarding planes? as quickly as back, the assessment is ridiculous and downright insulting.

I think there is a threat...but I reckon there will always be nutters around, but at the end of the day we are mosre likely to be victims of regular crime (theft, assault) etc.
I guess we all need to take care of ourselves and each other more - the government will look after their own if a major attack happened, wouldn't they?

It would be a great step if WE would study the real grouches of the people we think might provoke terrorism.
We may discover that there are quite a few nasty situations which are dragging on because we spend more money on violence that on listening.

It doesnt really affect me as I keep 2 ferrets in my hat all day. I dont think no one will mess with ferrets friends so its a good way to be safe from mad attackers. I can visit hell with my ferrets and my ice cream wont even melt. Get some ferrets and stop worrying about people who are mad. My ferrets like eating old lady's slippers and whole cucumbers. Tie string onto their back legs or they go awol for days in supermarkets! Their worst enemies are these dudes>> http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200504/r45997_119766.jpg AND traffic wardens. Hello . I live in a tree. How am I coping so far?
