They invite people they want to give honorary doctorates to. They ask people whom they want something from. To get one from as prestigious a university as MIT, you're going to have to be really rich and really famous. Likely in a field they're interested in.

If you really want to ask for one, you're going to have to personally talk to the President of the University or someone in a similar position of power. You're not going to find some online application for honorary degrees at MIT (or most reputable schools). Invitations normally come from networking.

My uncle has an honorary doctorate. He's the chairman of the board (and pres of the underlying co) of a company that's publicly traded. It has a market cap of over $2Billion. He was asked if he would accept that degree. I'm sure it's because they want donations and for him to appear at functions for them. They want to be associated with him because it will give them prestige to have someone like him "belong" to their university. It's not even that famous of a university.

For MIT, if you're international, you better be internationally famous. Whether for your achievements or for your wealth.

The specific answer to the OP's question is simple: "You cannot get an honorary degree from MIT." And it's precisely for the reasons articulated by the BA's response: MIT (and a handful of other institutions) do not give out honorary degrees as a matter of policy.
Yeah, this is a wicked-old question, but a friend thought MIT had awarded a degree honorus causa - not a chance.

Honorary Doctorate Application

One doesn't normally nominate oneself for an honorary degree. The university usually seeks you out.

Do you have a manager/booking agent in the US? If so, they can help you get speaking engagements at MIT or other universities. If you can land a gig as one of their graduate speakers, then an honorary degree is often a part of that.

Honorary doctorates are given by invitation only, as far as I know. You can't apply for one. If you want a doctorate, you'll have to do the work for one like the rest of us. Just because you are interviewed a lot doesn't mean you've done original research to justify a doctorate.

If you are asking Yahoo Answers then you probably don't qualify.
