I feel im a pretty decent student when it comes to school....my grades usually range from the C to B+ range, my dad claims i cant get into any good colleges with b's and c's it has to be all a's and b'. Is it possible for me to get into a mediocre or even good college with b's and c's?

Yes. You probably won't get into Ivy League with C-B+ average, but grades aren't everything when it comes to getting into most good colleges. If you are involved in a few extracurricular activities, have a hobby that you are passionate about, do community service, or anything like that, you stand a good chance at getting into a good school, even if your grades are average.

You get into a good college, but there's still a chance. Your grades in high school are only a measure of how hard you worked, not how smart you are. If you have good SAT or ACT scores, you still have a very good chance. And if you don't get into a good college, county/community college is always a good option. Lots of beginning college students wind up changing their major and dropping classes, it's better to do that at a school that is a lot cheaper!!

If you know of a school that you are interested in, you should check to see what their requirements are for admissions.

Usually there is a test, such as the SATs or the ACTs (I think that's more southern though, I had to take the ACTs). If you do well on it, then you have a decent shot.

But you should look to see why your grades are lower and why your dad says that -- do you not try your hardest? do you slack off a bit? College is a different world, and it takes some effort to do well, so you should look to see if it's something that you truly want to do, and if it is, then you should start working on improving your grades and working on your study habits now.

Good luck!

I'd think a very important factor is in what level of courses are your grades in?

ie. are you taking all Honors and AP courses, and a heavy load of them? A good school would take that into account. But if you are getting C's and B's in "regular" course, with lots of electives, etc., then you'll be "penalized" to some extent for those grades.

Indeed, SAT/ACT scores will heavily come into play (if you score well, they may think that you aren't working up to your potential in class, though) as will extracurriculars and letters of recommendation and your essay...and interview if you have one.

I'm sure you'll find a school that fits you well, but it would help you to boost those grades a bit, if only to keep the "door" a bit wider re: your opportunities.

Absolutely, I was the same type of student in high school. You won't get into Yale or Stanford, but there are some nice colleges you can choose from.

My advice, if you are looking for a college let me advise Eastern Connecticut State University. I went there and its great the faculty are intelligent and its a very nice college in general..check it out.

Absolutely. I got into a good private university with every grade from A's to D's on my transcripts. Make sure your entry letter is good and you have extracuricular activities on your application. Also, if you are still nervous do interviews at the schools you want to attend, so you have a better chance than a random piece of paper.

Good Luck. Don't let him stress you out, he just wants you to try harder and do the best you can.

There are actually a lot of good schools which accept students with grades like yours. Schools I think you should look at, which you have a shot of getting into based on your grades, include:

-Beloit College, in WI
-Elmira College, in NY
-Clemson, in SC
-Marist College, in NY
-Hampshire College, in MA
-Hobart & William Smith College, in NY
-Marlboro College, in VT
-Quinnepiac College, in CT
-Providence College, in RI
-Polytechnic University, in NY
-Marymount College of Fordham University, in NY
-Iona College, in NY
-Curry College, in MA
-North Adams State, in MA
-Dominican College, NY
-Howard University (very well respected school. Historically Black university)
-Kent State, OH
-Mercy College, NY

There are lots of others, as well. This is just a sample.

I'd consider all of these to be solid schools, although not as competitive as, say, UMass Amherst. And if you are able to get decent SAT scores, you may do very well in terms of getting admitted into some decent schools. No, not Harvard, but the vast majority of people don't go to Harvard, and they go on to become very successful in their respective fields anyway :grins:

You probably would not qualify for a great college unless you aced your ACT or SAT but you could get into a college with Bs and Cs it sounds like you Dad never went to college and does not want you to outshine him which is sad. Talk to your guidance counselor and see what colleges he thinks you should apply to.

its very possible to get into a good school. Most college recruiters recognize that students do not test very well- so they may ask for referrals from your teachers to check on yo ur day-to-day performance and how you relate in the classroom.

Good luck

Yes it is possible to get into a college. It won't be a top one, however. Try to make a few "A" grades to average out those "C" klunkers!!!
