DSL offers users a choice of speeds ranging from 144 Kbps to 1.5Mbps. Cable modem download speeds are typically up to 2 times faster than 1.5Mbps DSL, but the reason there is no clear speed winner is because cable technology is based on shared bandwidth, with many factors influencing a users download speed. With shared bandwidth the speed fluctuates depending on the number of subscribers on the network.

Oh course this all depends on where you live, and if other people in your area have it, Down the road there was a MediaPlay with a T1 connection that took up all our bandwidth and we never had a connection until it closed.

There is now high speed dial-up which offers speeds as good or better than some dsl providers.

The speed depends on the service provider. One of the largest providers here in the US is AT&T Yahoo DSL (was called SBC Yahoo DSL). I believe they have 4 DSL packages - each vary on the connection speed - off course faster connections mean higher cost. But at the same time the costs have got very competitive and low it's worth every dollar you pay.

Who ever you sign up with or what ever plan you choose - you need to look at your needs for the internet. If your on-line activities need lower bandwidth - like listening to music online,
or are you just surfing to read info, etc. a 1.5MBPS connection would be pretty good. Some activities such as watching videos, movies on-line, downloading a lot of files, songs, etc.. You will require a higher bandwidth - a minimum connection speed of 2MBPS or higher. Faster connection is always better, brings you smooth playing videos, music and quicker downloads.

FYI: Here is some info on DSL vs. Cable - I extracted from one of the answers I posted to another question.

If you are on a DSL connection, higher the distance between the DSL hub (normally the telephone exchange) and your modem, your bandwidth will deteriorate. So you could have a slower connection even though you subscribed to a 2MBPS connection.

Unlike DSL, Cable modem connection will provide you the bandwidth you subscribed to, that is if you have a 2MBPS connection you will be close to the 2MBPS bandwidth. However, the bandwidth will deteriorate when you have more number of computers connected. That is, if lots of people are on-line, the bandwidth will not be at the max, it will drop some.

To determine the relative speed, a rule of thumb is that The downloaded bytes per second is about equal to the download bits per second divided by 10. There are 8 bits per byte, but overhead accounts for about 2 bits.

With dial-up you can download about 5.6 KB/S. The least expensive dsl connection will download about 75 KB/S. The fastest DSL will probably download about 150 KB/S or 10 MByte per minute. Internet overhead results in a limit on download speed. A 3 Mbps DSL is not much faster than a 1.5 Mbps DSL connection.

At 10 MByte per minute you can download a 700 MB CD in 70 minutes.

it's really not that much faster than dial-up. I had it for a while but got rid of it cause it wasn't worth the money. Just go for the high speed it's expensive but I think it' worth the time that it saves you.

I'm a BT customer in the U.K. and have a connection speed of ~6.4Mb/s. I was on a 2Mb/s connection until they offered a free upgrade to 8Mb/s. You will immediately notice that the internet has become SO much more interesting!

Max speeds that I've seen are up to 3Mbps. You will probably just get the normal 1.5Mbps. That is still much faster then dialup.
