The best way to describe Bluetooth Technology is as a "Personal Area Network". (In official networking terminology, there is a Wide Area Network, which covers a long distance, e.g. the Internet, and a Local Area Network, which is just for, say, a specific office or building; thus, a Personal Area Network is a very short-range network that is, theoretically, designed to be limited to one person.) In effect, it allows smaller devices that could not normally, on their own, support a higher-level network connection, such as a headset, gaming console controller, keyboard, etc. to wirelessly connect to each other. The major advantage with Bluetooth is that, unlike most other connection technologies, USB for instance, which are based on one device being in control and the other devices being controlled by it, Bluetooth is entirely add-hoc, which means that ever device has as much power as much power as every other device, which is why you could, technically, have a headset connected to a cell phone which is connected to a PDA which is connected to a computer, whereas with USB every device would have to connect through the computer, no exceptions.
