I want to determine the specific gravity of small particulates. I have used chemicals for that purpose in the past, but they were always supplied by others and I do not know the source of the chemicals. The ones I used came in small boxes, and certain amounts were mixed with water to create a clear liquid with a high density. I want to do the same now. Thanks.

Use glycerol, it has high density and its easily available. I remember using it for my terminal velocity experiments at college.
If you are not exactly looking at a clear solution you could use honey too :)
