Do you think it's disrespectful when you see it?

I think it is...I'm glad some other peple can see it as just a piece of linen, but the image on the linen carries with it a long and painful history.
As a black person, I instantly think "KKK" when I see the flag, as that particular group often used that flag (along with the American flag) as a symbol of thier staunch beliefs. The Night Riders carried this flag when seeking to LYNCH black men. It's just as bad as a burning cross, in my book.
I went to high school in southern Indiana. A group of young men would proudly display their "Stars and Bars" in the parking lot after school and yell racial epithats - reminding the small minority population that went to my HS that we were not welcomed. Mind you, I graduated in '98...this was not that long ago, folks!
Yes, this is a free country, but that flag represents [to many people] hatred, intimidation, and bigotry. I cringe at the thought of being black in Mississippi and having to walk up to government offices with that flag flying. With the emotions that it invokes, those are hardly feelings that would make me proud to be an American.

No. As long as you are not displaying it for the wrong reasons. It is full of history and many stories. If you are displaying it to put down or build up a certain race then it is wrong. I am from the south and it is a part of my history like other people see images as part of their history. I do not think that it is disrespectful, but the person displaying it can be disrespectful.

I am torn on this one. I know it is being equated to a race issue, but I think it more relates to how the people of the South feel about regional pride. Not everyone who flys a Confederate flag is doing so to protest the repeal of slavery. It may be a symbol and offensive to some people. That being said, I think a thicker skin on everyone's part would be helpful.

You are most lkely refering to The Stars and Bars which is the battle ensign of the Confederate forces... Not The Confederate Flag... Many, far too many, very brave men followed the Stars and Bars into battle... it is a disgrace that the worthless low life scum of no manhood have so denigrated that banner which represented, and to me still dose, the bravery of so many.... and the fact that it is displayed with such irreverance by so many.... I do not have any thing but respect for all those who died for waht they believed on both sides of that conflict... I do not fly the Stars and Bars as I am a Citizen of The Uninted States.... But I respect those who's bravery The Stars and Bars Truly represent.
Always remember...Many brave Blacks also fought and died following that banner into battle.

I don't see it as disrespectful at all. Anybody who does is looking for a reason to find it so. There are many southern people who display it in remembrence of their forefathers who fought in the Civil War, yet it is always turned around by outsiders that we display it as a race issue. It sure would be nice if those people could be enlightened as to its purpose. They must have skipped that day in History class.

Is it apprpriate to display the symbol of an idea that enslaved millions of people. Is it ok to diplay a flag of the former Soviet Union in a cultural context, what about the pre WW2 German Flag, what about a Nazi Flag. If you think you can get away with it without getting shot, go for it, it is free speech, but not all freely spoken speech is smart, well thought out speech. Think about what it means to some people first.

Nope, not at all. If the flag offends you- you need a history lesson.
It's a part of history. I have a confederate flag as my curtain in my bedroom. I love the flag because of it's history- not anything that it represented. The Civil War was a major part in the making of our country, so some people may just love it for history like I do.

Not at all. i mean some people display it to be disrespectful but the majority of people dont do it for disrespect. i feel that it is a part of history and part of peoples heritages. i mean other cultures can wear, display, etc symbols, people, etc from their heritage and that seems to be fine! but let someone wear a shirt with a rebel flag on it and my goodness you would think they committed murder! i see nothing at all wrong with the confederate flag at all! am i wrong for this? You may think so but I DONT!

It is a part of history. One should not change history to suit some people who dislike the past. Just because it's on display doesn't mean the next step is the return of blacks to the cotton fields.

I personally don't think it's disrespectful and I was born, raised and still live in North Carolina. However, in no other war have we allowed a captured flag to continue to fly.
