I am not sure why you think we are more heartless than we used to be. The history of the human race is filled with violence against each other. I am guessing that as little as 100 years ago, we did not hear about much of the violence that went on. There were 60 million people killed in WWII. That seemed like a just cause, but the numbers are staggering.

Yes and look at the Spanish Inquisition that was run by the Catholic Church. Some of the most brutal and bloodiest moments in human history was started and ran by the church. Now don't get me wrong I'm a christian minded person, but the fact is that more human misery has been done in "GOD'S" name than for any other reason. Usually the "human heart" has nothing to do with killing a fellow human being. Most of the time it is an action precipitated by the brain. In many cases it is done as a matter of personal or group survival. Perhaps you refer to "murdering" another human being, which is an entirely different matter from "killing" them. The prohibition in the 10 commandments is on "committing murder" not killing, if you read the correct translation. Sometimes our sense of compassion for our families requires us to kill someone who is about to kill them.
