With the abolition of slavery in the British colonies in 1838, many plantation economies like Trinidad were left looking for alternative sources of cheap labor. Trinidad tried to draw Europeans, but the heat made them ineffective.

After the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean, there was a need for cheap labour and that is when the labourers from India and China were brought into keep working the sugar and cocoa plantations. The plantations continued to exist and flourish and are still are part of the infrastructure of some islands as far as exportation is concerned. The labourers were offered to come to the Caribbean and work for two years on the plantations and then they would own they land they worked. Race relations in the Caribbean, historically, has never been about skin colour in as much as class. The class issues are race related and is as a result of colonialism, as we call it, and starts with the Europeans at the top, labourers in the middle and ex-slaves at the bottom. However, racism has never been a primary concern in the Caribbean, or at least Trinidad, unless you are talking about politics, the real division is classism and what ppl believe to be of higher classes. Hope I helped.
