I have some job interviews coming up soon. I've been out of work since August 2006. The reason was because I developed stomach problems that prevented me from working. I'm currently on treatments and doing much better. As far as my last employer, he ended up letting me go because I couldn't work. In interviews, they ask why did you leave your last job. How should I word it when my last employer let me go because of my medical problems that are now much better with my treatments? I don't want to make my employer look bad or myself. How should I answer this question if it comes up?

I'm a recruiter and I can tell you that you have no obligation to tell anyone about your medical problems. That being said, there's really no way around this without sounding vague. I'd explain that you had to take time out of the work force for medical reasons and are now well and ready to get back out there. That's all they need to know and it explains your employment gap. Though it may seem a bit personal, any good recruiter will drop the subject after that and you haven't given away any real detail. Never tell anyone you were fired....ever. No matter what advice you get here. I hope this helps you, good luck!

I agree with mismatch, Very good advice. I will add, you may even say i took some personal time to resovle some issues.

Even if the potential employers contacted your past employer it is against the law for them to say anything other than yes you worked there from when to when.

If your personal references are called they can say what ever.

And please interview the potential employers to. Never discuss pay in the first interview. Discuss that when offered the job.
One of the things i do as an Employment Specialist it train persons on interviewing skills and such.

Good luck with your interviews.

I'm anxious to be a part of the team. The Company goals are my personal goals. I'm looking for new opportunities.
Tell the truth on this one. I've had an illness and have been unable to work. Give them a short prognosis and tell them how you are much better with proper treatment.

first off the first employer should not have fired you that is agenst the law... big time...
second you should say that you took some time off from working in order to take care of some personal reasons. and that is that and if they ask what reasons say medical. but that they are under control now... and say that it was a decision between you and yoru previous employer for you to stop working..
good luck

My recommendation would be to say that you had a medical problem and could not work and they let you go and you have since been treated for the problem. BTW I think it was illegal for them to fire you seeing as you had a medical disability. I would ask someone about that.

I would say you needed a temporary medical leave of absence for treatment of a stompach condition and your prior employer wasn't able to give it to you. Definitely say why so people won't think that you are a mental case!!!

Try the truth. You don't want to go to work for a company that might not be sympathetic to your issues if the time comes that you need time off. Honesty is the best policy.

be honest, be yourself. explain the situation truthfully, if the future employer has any questions/problems with your explanation, i am sure they will ask. dont stress over this, it is nothing to be ashamed of, just tell the truth. employers are looking for honesty above all else. if they cant trust you, they wont hire you...
