My pc speakers have always worked fine. I installed a webcam for the first time last week, and tried using both msn messenger and skype for voice / video calls, but the speakers are just not playing ball! They break up all voice (including that of others) so am convinced it is them, not the microphone integrated into the webcam. The dialogue box "Sounds and Audio Devices" pops up but then closes again when I turn on / reboot PC. Have looked through there, but cannot find what is wrong. Please help!

I would say it has nothing to do with your speakers or microphone. I think it is your Internet connection, if you do not have decent broadband it will be choppy because it cannot send the data fast enough.

with msn messenger - have you done the audio tuning wizard?
open the messenger list window -
click on Tools - click on Audio Tuning Wizard - follow the instructions in the window that pops up
how old is your computer?
it may be that - if you have the newer versions of those programs they may not be compatible with your computer (your computer can't handle the programs)
does your messenger work on the voice chat alone? (without the webcam?)
do you have your webcam running while you're attempting to have msn messenger and skype programs open at the same time?
if so - it's possible your computer can't handle more than one program using webcam at once

if a speaker plays regular sound but not microphone noises, then it cannot be the speakers, if it was ALL sound would be equally distorted.

Have you tried modifying the sensitivity of the input and output of the voice conversation in msn or skype? try turning it down a fraction and see what results bring.

Yoi_55 also hits home with a good point, regular 56k internet will not give good quality sound/video transfer rates (especially when they are combined)

the dynamic resolution isn't great enough to catch the nuances of the human voice. I would say upgrade. You might want to invest in a nice sound card for $50, or so, as well.
