Microphone and MS Office ( I think that's what youre talking about) are not directly related.
Try going to:
Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices

Make sure your recording devices are configured properly and not muted.

Errr im not to sure about the microphone you might have to take the laptop back if its really a problem.

But office does not come as standard on any laptops or desktops unless you pay for it. But its still available on the high street or online. (its just another way for microsoft to get money out of you!!!!!)

Go to the Audio area of Control panel, and make sure that the proper options for the Microphone is ticked; it may just be muted

Yep most likely the Mic is just muted quite common Uncheck the mute box in the Vol Control panel

Nop there is no link b/w the two...Go to control panel and check the settings under sound and audio devices icon...

no there should not be.
if you go to control panel and find a icon for sound and microphone there should be a microphone volume there.

ok, what kind of laptop do you have and do you mean microsoft office? for that, you will have to buy it.
