Normally he sleeps through the night but he has been waking up every night for about 2 weeks. He has also been hard to get to sleep sometimes the only way I can get him to go to sleep is to take him for a drive. Please help. Why is he doing this and what can I do?

My 20 month old son was doing the same thing last month. I tried everything. The only thing I did was create a new habit...he'd end up in bed with us every night around 2-3ish and he slept fine but my husband and I ended up with no sleep. I finally had to toughen up a little and let him cry it out. I would go in for a sec to let him know I was there and if he cried after that, he cried. Two nights later he was sleeping all night again.

could be he had a bad dream and is afraid of going and staying asleep. My 2yr old did this when he was teething. His legs would cramp when he was getting in his 2 yr molars. Have you checked him for teething?
Try giving him a warm bath before bedtime and make bedtime easy as possible for him. Get a dim night light, some are so bright you don't need any other light, and some are dim so it is easier to sleep with them on. Anyway this helped my daughter, turns out she would wake up at night and be afraid of the dark, so she would not want to go back to sleep.
Good luck and I hope you find out what is the problem.

If he's still taking a nap in the afternoons, it might be time to scale that back, so he's actually tired by the time he goes to bed. Also, make a routine for him: finish supper, play for a little while, pick up toys, put on PJs, brush teeth, story, snuggle, lights-out. If he can get used to a positive routine that works with your routine, he might be less apt to wake up and stay up early in the morning. Good luck--

okay, first of all, this might sound crazy to you, but it worked for my son. i believe that we have lived past lives and that sometimes we are haunted by them. so if you're son is having nightmares every night or waking up at the same time every night for no apparent reason, it may be something that has lingered from a past life (in my own personal case, i used to dream about being burned a the stake every night since I was a baby.) anyway, if you pray over your son the moment he falls asleep and ask God to take away any negative memories of past lives, it may help. it helped for me and it helped for my son. he doesn't wake up in the middle of the night anymore.

If you start the driving to get him back to sleep it will not stop for a long time. I would stop doing that now and just try other things. Read a story, play soft music, rub his back, etc. If nothing else works, ask the pediatrician. They might have other ideas.

Could be an ear infection. That bothers kids more lying down then sitting up, thats why the car seat may help.

Maybe your husband has been sneaking home from the bar at 2a.m. and your kid hears him. Make your husband stop going out so often and maybe everything will be alright.
