The only kind of alarm that will prevent the theft of your car is one with a starter kill. On my old car, I actually wired in a switch to turn off the horn on the alarm, since the horn was no more than a distraction. The only thing that the alarm was good for was the starter kill feature.

Alarms will only stop unprofessional thieves, if the thief is a pro your car is history. Like said above a hidden starter disconnect or hidden ignition disconnect is the best way.

I don't think they prevent theft as much as discourage theft. If someone wants your car bad enough, they are going to take it. I am going to install one on my 67 when it is done, plus Lojack, but I don't have any on any other cars/trucks I own.

it just depends where your car is parked, i would steal a car even if it had a car alarm on it, just for fun, and to see how long it takes to disconnect the alarm.

No, because the person just has to say, without looking guilty,
"Dang, this thing is ALWAYS going off!"
