Xenophobia is an irrational fear of foreigners. Whilst I would agree that there is an element of mistrust of the unknown in racism, I think that word is a little extreme.

According to accepted social psychological doctrine, one of the main causes of racism is relative deprivation. This is a sense of resentment based on the perception that a minority group or individual has more than the person in question, usually obtained unfairly. You see a lot of this in high unemployment areas where quality of life is poorer and there is more competition for jobs. As minority group members often have a strong family work ethic and a tendency to gather in large communities, this can often worsen their isolation and the resentment of others.

Unfortunately, it is part of human nature to react negatively to any one in an "outgroup". It is a "them vs. us" mentality. Couple that with competition for resources and cultural misunderstandings and you get racism. Take a look at Sherif's (1958) studies on intergroup conflict.

Don't know what Luke's on about ... it's the fear of foreigners or strangers... back to your question... so many reasons why a person is a rascist but at the top of the tree has to be ignorance.

For one thing ignorance. That being said its easy for it to happen it can become a position for any person on earth for example you said ALL racists you are stereotyping and classifying a group of people unfairly without a scientific or sociological basis. This little critique of your premise is brought to you today by the Bureau of Political Correctness.
