She must have listed me as either a reference or contact. I have received 5 calls from these folks - they were EXTREMELY rude when I told them to stop calling me as she does not and never has lived with me. Told them I consider their calls harassment since I have nothing to do with her finances (nor do we even live in the same state). Went through 3 people - was told that I would not be called any longer. As an aside, I told them that even if they were speaking to my daughter-in-law that these continuous calls would represent harassment. They informed me that they could call her every 2-3 days and not have it considered as harassment (by law). I honestly don't know all the details since I really don't discuss finances with my adult 'kids' BUT is that true?? What constitutes harassment by these folks? Thanks for any info.

If you are unrelated to any of her debts, it would be illegal for them to contact you. You can report them to the FTC and probably other state/federal agencies.

Next time they call, tell them that you are recording. Get a name, state the date and time, and tell whomever you speak to that they are no longer to call. Tell them that your daughter-in- law doesn't live there and here is her number. End the call by saying that if they call again, you will be reporting the company to the BBB, FTC, and anyone else. Then let them know that you will be contacting an attorney for a possible lawsuit.

Why don't you just give them her phone number? Wouldn't that take care of the problem?

Next time they call, just say, "No, she doesn't live here, but I can give you her number if you'd like". Alternately, you could just say, "No, you have the wrong number."

If she has listed you as a reference, then it's HER fault, not theirs, that you're getting these calls. On top of the fact that she gave them your number without your permission, she is apparently not paying her bills, which she needs to do. You should connect with her ASAP, and have her call the offending company - to pay the bill, and to have them remove your number from her account.
