Peanut better suprisingly. They like the smell of it it attracts them alot faster than cheese. I learn this from experience. Good luck with the project. Below are some sites that support it.

This is from experiance. Mice as well as rats perfer peanut butter. I dont know why but they do. It'll catch those boogers quicker in a trap then any cheese or grain. As far as cheese goes I am sure they would consume it but they also have a hard time digesting it.

You should never give a mouse cheese as mice are all lactose intolerant. All the mice i have had have loved peanut putter though so go with that.

peanut butter. sorry i dont know where i know that from but i do know they are attracted to the smell of a food. cheese is not really a favourite that is something that cartoons made up....
