can someone explain to me in simple terms what a wireless router does. I have one desktop pc in the house, the phone junction box is by the front door which is about 20 ft away from the pc, so i am currently using an extension for my internet which everyone keeps tripping over! Will a wireless router, connected to the junction box remove the need for an extension cable, or is this equipment only useful if you have another pc or a laptop other than your main pc.

The situation you're in is exactly the reason wireless routers were invented.

No, you can hook up a wireless router to the incoming signal and the router will transmit the packets over the WiFi connection. You have to get a wireless card for your desktop too. Set up the router with the wired connection, then switch.

If by junction box you mean a high speed modem then yes a wireless router will work by sending the data to your computer wirelessly to an adapter that you install on your comuter. If you have dial-up then you cannot do this.

If you are using Dial-Up, you have no need for a router. You only need one if you have broadband internet (DSL, Cable, etc.) and want to either protect yourself or share the connection bewteen multiple computers easily. The wireless part just means that you can connect to it wirelessly.

you may have problems with this once you've bought a cable modem, it truly is going to attempt to route all of your internet site visitors out of the cable connection port (which isn't proper), really than down the wire on your router. ideally you should have bought a repeater for this job. you want to apply fastened IPs for the pcs connected to the recent prompt get admission to point and also you'll favor to set those up manually to apply your ADSL router as their gateway, really than some thing the cable router hands out. you would possibly want to properly have the ability to bodge your self internet connectivity this way.
