Six kids die in copycat hangings. http://www.news24.com/News24/Africa/News/0,9294,2-11-1447_2056725,00.html
Is innocent children dying just the price we must pay to satisfy our blood lust for the death penalty?

Every day kids do stupid things - someone must be blamed!!

It is easier to deal with lose when there is someone to blame- even if it is a stretch of the imagination.

When our oldest son was killed - I blamed a lot of things but that is part of grief.
He was going to work - should people stop working?
He was in a car - should people stop driving?
He was killed by a truck - should truck drivers be put out of work?
The list can be endless but it won't change what happened.

While these kids may have been mimicking the hanging of Saddam, those that take place in America are for different reasons.

Kids today hang themselves to get a so called high that is felt just before passing out. They do this within a group so that someone can save them from actually dieing but unfortunately that doesn't always work.

I honestly don't think that the death penalty has any impact on what kids will or will not do.

If US death penalty laws have ever executed a single innocent person it is reason enough to end the death penalty. The idea that executing some innocent people is acceptable if it helps prevent a killer go free and kill other people is a ridiculous argument.

It's sad that 6 children died because their parents felt they should be allowed to watch Saddam hang. More children have died trying to copycat the Jackass movies than from watching Capital Punishment. Perhaps we should eliminate all movies. Or perhaps parents just shouldn't let their children watch things that will lead to destructive behavior.

BTW, Thousands of innocent children are aborted each day. If we really cared about the innocent children, we'd stop sentencing them to the death penalty in the womb.

These are two completely unrelated issues, and a lame attempt at your part to stir up trouble and attempt to justify your opinion. I also don't see how events in Africa have any bearing at all on what takes place in our country.

Might I suggest you check out just how many kids hanged themselves in the 1970s when Alice Cooper started doing it onstage as a part of his show?

Then check and see how many kids accidentally hang themselves each Halloween trying to be scary.

Lame. Very lame, indeed.

1st, sometimes kids hang themselves. That's a tragic fact of life. I don't mean to sound callous, but 6 is a small number. Is there any proof that their suicides were in response to Saddam's execution?

2) IF (& that's a big if) Saddam's were the impetus, the most that would tell us is that we shouldn't have videotapes of hangings available.

No. Best way to keep a killer from doing what he/she wants to do is remove them from ever having a possible chance of killing again.

Way before age 12, all my kids knew that hanging oneself is wrong. Not that difficult a concept for someone of at least moderate intelligence.

The responsibility here rests with the parents allowing their children to watch the hanging in the first place.

Actually, it seems a better reason to require parent licenses.
