Run install Hardware from Control Panel. Have the Drivers and Setup software on the CD available in the drive, or loaded on to the Hard Drive.
When you get to select the driver for the CD Burner, use the "Have own Disk" option, and select the driver from the Software Disk, Hard Drive, or USB ( should you so Select)

Cd or dvd units dont use the windows installer. Your bios automatically detects it. You should see it during boot. Open my computer and it should show as a drive. If it doesnt, check the jumper settings on the drive and make sure it is set to the slave position if you have another cd unit. If you dont, set it as master. If it doesnt show up in my computer after this, the drive is probably trashed. If you see it in my computer, you can burn with the latest windows media player. You will however need burning software if you want to burn anything other than mdia files.

there are 2 IDE lines:
Primary and secondary. Each has two connectors. On each line you can put 2 device (hard drives or cd drives or mix). One device should be configured as "master", another as "slave". Take a look on the back of devices. There are jumper (or jumpers) witch configure master/slave and some pictures with jumper positions on back top

Go to the website of the company that made the hardware and see if there are any plug ins or Drivers for that model, and download them.
Windows wont recognize it, if it dhas never seen it before and has nothing to reference it from.

Check the jumpers and read the manual carefully.
Also you may want to configure the bios settings.
Make sure that if it is a slave drive it is set as a slave on the jumpers and the master drive's jumpers are set correctly.
Just a thought
