The heating bills are getting higher in winter and my parents would rather wear their coats in the house than turning up the heat. When I visit I would complain about the cold but they insist that if I keep my coat on then it should be ok. I think it is very uncomfortable and it is not good for them either, but don't know how to convince them without causing a riff. Any ideas?

I don't think that anyone would choose to live in a house so cold that you need to wear a coat. The next time you visit (or even sooner if possible) try to find the real reason. As people age they begin to live on fixed incomes or perhaps lose their jobs and have to cut down on costs. If you find that money is a factor, perhaps you, and your siblings if you have them, could pitch in and help with the heat bill. If not then call you Congress and Senate Representative's their numbers are listed in the phone book. No one would want to live like that, I have a feeling they may need some sort of help. You, as their son, should take on that responsibility. Good luck.

It's their house ... and their bills ... if you don't live there or help out with utilities ... you really don't have any say what so ever about how cold they keep their house ... shoot I've even started trying to cut cost down ... by keeping the heater off until it's bedtime ... it seems to help ... anyway ... let them be and wear your coat ... nothing is wrong with that ... !

As a 73yr old living on a limited income I am very surprised to find a question such as yours that needs an answer. You will find all the answers you need here if you have time to read them.. I would think your parents are very proud and you should pride yourself you have parents such as these.HELP THEM and remember that but for their love you would not be here. Try a more tactful approach.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do because it is their house. A suggestion I do have is maybe sending them money to help with the heating bills.
