I would like to make a chore chart between myself and my husband, but I'm not really sure where to start. When and how often should everything be "cleaned"? Thanks for any info! :)

here's what my husband and i do:
monday:
i make dinner, do dishes, do laundry and walk the dog
he plays with the baby and entertains the baby
if the baby is sleeping, and he can put him down, then he will help by picking up odds and ends here and there.

tuesday:
he does dinner, dishes, vaccuums, picks up the house and dusts (all the quick way, not in depth dusting and vaccuuming)
i do the baby

wednesday:
i do dinner, dishes, walk the dog, clean whatever is needed, baby's room, finish laundry, pick up doggie doo...
he takes the baby

thursday:
he does dinner etc....
i do baby

friday:
we relax and take turns with baby and dinner, dishes, etc. often times this night we will order pizza, fast food or go out to eat or doa quick dinner so we have family time.

saturday and sunday are ususally finishing any laundry, we take the dog to petsmart or the dog park
we have family time, basically. the bathrooms will usually get done on the weekend and the second or thrid vaccuuming for the week.

we always make sure that by about 8pm on the weeknights we are done our chores. so, whoever's night it is for dinner etc...they need to hussle and get things done. that's the rule. no sitting around checking email. that can be done after 8 and the baby is in bed. also, you can make each night whatever chores you want, we just kind of go with the flow, but that's the "outline" that we follow. the big thing is making sure that one person takes care of the baby and the other is really getting things done. that way the weekend can be more family time and not clean the house all weekend.

also, i did a spreadsheet of all dinners and side dishes i could think of that we make. (we add to it over time, but it was a start) that way every sunday i look at the list and pick what we will eat for the week. then, i go grocery shopping for the week. usually while i'm shopping my husband is home doing the bathrooms or washing the cars...something constructive.
this way we are getting things done that need to be done and no one feels like they're doing more (which hasn't happened since we started this).
sometimes i make him lists and i have lists of what else needs to be done, like the dog needs heartworm pills, or i need him to work on the fence....stuff like that.

good luck and be sure that you are both on the same page and you work on your routine together!

take care.

Dusting & vacuuming should be once a week, unless you have kids, them 2-3 times a week or daily. I have a Eureke Quick-up that I use daily for surface cleaning and then use the big vacuum once a week for deep cleaning (I have a 2 year-old that can spread crumbs faster than anything). Removal of clutter like newspapers and magazines should be done daily. Kitchen/bathroom countes hand hold all kinds of bacteria so daily cleaning is essential. I keep a container of Clorox wipes under the kitchen & bathroom sinks. Mopping of the floors is done once a week...I also use my Eureka for this instead of sweeping. It is a cordless sweeper and it is a lifesaver. $29.99 at Target. Keep paper grocery bags to use for dailly trash pick ups around the house.

With all of "the usual disclaimers (THUD)," I would highly recommend The Queen of Clean Cleans Everything. I have a husband, 4 kids and 2 dogs - her book has made cleaning our fairly large house much more manageable. She breaks it down into weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly chore-charts that are acutually do-able without spending your entire weekend. Best of luck (and GREAT New Year's resolution!).

My wife is a freak about cleaning. She sweeps/mops at least 4 times a wk, as well as vacums that often. Dusting and that kinda crap about 2 times a wk. Shampoo's the floors about once a wk. Laundry just about every night, not counting "whites" those just couple times a wk. Bath rooms 3-4 times. She is a real freak about the house like I said. She won't let me help her at all. Maybe fold the clothes. But I never seem to get anything else done the way she wants it so she does it all. After a few yrs of marriage I'm getting used to her habbits and just stay out of the way.

I clean a little bit everyday, so on Saturdays when my husband and I have our "major clean house day" it will be easier on the both of us so we can go out and have fun.
