we had fantails they often used to swim oddly, i believe its something to do with their swim bladders and it is common with fantails.

What do you mean by erratically ? I am supprised he has been acting up over a day. There might be something wrong with him, just keep an eye on him. A lot of times fish that you get from fish stores are sick because they are not kept in the best conditions. Why else would they allow you 15 days for it to die to get a new one ?

I'm not an expert on this or anything, but i've been told that when fish get moved to new surroundings, they can get stressed, which makes them constipated. I was told by the shop to place a cooked pea in the water, the fish is to nibble it and it is supposed to relieve it of this. I'd phone the shop where you got it from and see if they can give you any advice. Hope it's ok.

Did you cycle the tank before you got him?
First of all, have you cycled your tank? In the wild, and in established tanks, there are nitrifying bacteria that break down toxic ammonia from fish waste and excess food into less toxic nitrates. In a brand new tank, these bacteria don't exist, so any fish in the tank will produce ammonia, which, not being broken down by bacteria, will kill or weaken the fish. So, it is vital to cycle your tank.
If you didn't cycle it, you'll need to do small daily water changes to remove the ammonia that builds up, while the bacterial colonies develop, which takes 2-4 weeks.
Did you acclimate them when you brought them home? Putting them straight in the new tank can shock them because of temp, pH, etc difference. Typically, you should let the bag float in the tank for about 10 minutes, then gradually add water from your tank to the bag over the next 20 minutes, then release the fish adn throw away the water in the fish bag.

likely to be something wrong if only one acting that way. I'd go and get some anti-disease stuff from a local pet shop and put the recommended dose in the tank.

if he does continue it very longer then yeh gotta bother.
that guys is just seeing your house , i feel he is amused
and i think u are too cute and hes got very excited about you owning him. try to stand near the fish pot and place your finger very gently on the glass and see if he is moving with your finger, try to play with it. and once it finds out the regular place to sleep and the surface to eat the food it will be fine. please feed the fish in the food pot at the same spot. they fix the point where u put the food.

You need to look for skin irritation and then treat accordingly. It could be a fluke. Hope you get it sorted.

it may just be trying to be the dominant fish in the tank or it may be showing off to the females
