It's what we do to lot of our words - we shorten them and put a Y or an O at the end. Examples:
Football - Footy
Breakfast - Brekky
Barbeque - Barbie
Afternoon - Arvo
Its just Aussie slang is all! :-)

because down here we like to Abbreviate. Very few say do you wanna go watch the football. its " lets go watch the footy" same with basketball = b ball.
I just take it its an Aussie Term, theres an example for ya we rather call our selves Aussies then Australians. Abbreviation is the key Mate :P
