Close enough for some people to be able to swim across .
Probably around 20 miles .
Wait till summer before you paddle across. The North Sea is very rough and cold . LOL

Well the channel tunnels underwater section is 24 miles long >Iguess they must have chosen the shortest route possible so I reckon the answer is 24 miles
