That's a great question! The mane keeps their neck warm in the winter and cool in the summer (by giving the neck shade). The tail is for swishing away flying pests and for protecting it's back end and underbelly when it's cold and windy. Have you ever noticed horses always stand with their back end to the wind?

A horses tail is an effective fly swatter in the summer and aids in keeping the thinner, less furry areas of their back ends warm in the winter. Their manes are also to keep bugs off in the summer, as well as to provide coolness from the rays of the sun. in the winter, it provides another layer of insulation for their necks to keep warm!

The tail of a horse helps get the pesty bugs off the back end and underneith the horse and the mane of a horse protects it from pesty bugs and will keep the horse cool on the hot days.

The tails make a really effective fly swatter. I once got in the way of a really powerful swish of the tail, and got swatted in the neck. OMG it hurt like crazy! Would have killed the fly for sure!
Manes are for warmth I imagine. And cuteness. :)

Helps to keep flies etc. off of them. That tail swish is a great fly swatter and shaking the head/main helps too. Other than that, I think it's a lot like hair on a human. Looks good!

Tail.....to swish off flies and acts as an indication of feeling.....ex...
Swishing tail....means irritated
High held tail means excited.......
