I have the above car (02 Reg) It's very sluggish and won't go more than 5 miles an hour. Sometimes its ok, but when playing up, there is loads of black smoke coming from the exhaust. Can anybody tell me what I may need to look at? PLEASE!

Please see an approved Renault Dealer immediately or diesel specialist, These diesel systems are high pressure systems and are not to be played with NO DIY!!

If it a petrol engine in it the symptoms are of an excessively rich mixture that is too much fuel and not enough air first see if removing the air filter element helps ( this holds good for Diesel engines too ) you can run without the filter for a while but do get it replaced ASAP

failing this it sounds as if you have choke or start up enrichment device problem, a bit more information would help

Hope this Helps

maff sensor, its an airflow sensor between the airfilter and the inlet manifold, cleaning doesnt really work so just replace. You can try tapping it when the fault occurs and if the car runs ok at least you know its definately that. Ignore some of the sunday morning specialists on here, if it was timing / pump / air filter, it would do it all the time

YOU NEED TO TELL US IF ITS PETROL OR DIESEL,MAKES A LOT OF DIFFERENCE.
thanks diesel, it sounds like its jumped a tooth on the timing belt,if not it could be the injector pump, quite expensive.look at the timing belt first to see if its slack or any signs of missing teeth.if all looks ok a fitter will have to check the pump out, you havent filled it with petrol by mistake have you ???

Just burn it, it doesnt deserve the vast amount of cash you are about to spend on it at the Renault dealer
