Learning the game is easy, the best book to start with would be the players handbook 3.5 this will teach you alot about the game basics & creating a character, every thing else is mostly for the Game Master or Dungeon Master as they are commonly called.

Different groups play in different ways. Some like to concentrate on battles and rolling dice. Others like to concentrate on weaving a story. I played in a few different groups. One was there to have fun and laugh. Another was there to take things very seriously and to acquire as many levels and treasure items as possible. Another was there to tell a story with a few dungeons thrown in almost randomly.

I would go to your local games shop... there's bound to be a group playing on a regular basis there, or if not there are messages on the wall asking for people to join their group.

The best way to learn would to find someone who plays it. That's the way I learned. You could get a copy of the player's handbook to learn the rules. I know you can download them free from some torrent sites.
