That's a silly question, because the government can play a role in anything if brought up to its extreme. How about this:
(a) I was born in a public hospital that was helped by the Government to provide facilities for my care.
(b) My parents bought a house through FmHA -- a program to help those people buy houses at reduced interest.
(c) My parents taught at public schools, putting food on our table through very, very hard work.
(d) I was educated at a public school, free to me because of others' tax contributions.
(e) My public school was quality due to the contributions of state and federal governments (even though I lived in a poorer, rural area)
(f) I went to college and got to major in what a chose, in part due to federal student loans.
(e) I went to law school in a public institution -- subsidized by taxpayers--so I wouldn't be burdened with hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans
(g) I worked for the federal government for a judge, helping people to resolve their disputes, and the cost of using this system is almost free
(h) I walk to work every day knowing that I'm not going to be ruthlessly gunned down in the street nor forced to pay some "toll" to a militia. The government makes me safe
(i) I drive to the grocery store in a car I know has passed government safety tests, with safety features that it would never had otherwise had.
(j) The road I drive on is free to drive on. It's relatively free of potholes and is not going to crumble under my car. Because people are licensed, I know that, in general, they are not totally inexperienced drivers. Because there are traffic laws, I have a reasonably confident feeling that, when I go through the intersection on a green, someone else isn't going to "decide" to go through the intersection on a red.
(k) I buy groceries that are clean, and from a store that has been regulated to ensure that meat is not spoiled, bread is not moldy, and that I am allowed to know the contents of my food.
(l) I return to my apartment where I have electricity (in many places provided by a government agency) water, sewer (very clean, thanks to the government) and a safe roof over my head.
(n) I watch a movie, protected by copyright, which keeps creative people working, on a DVD player, protected by a patent, which also keeps creative people playing.
(o) I go to bed, breathing (relatively) clean air, and once again relatively safe from random looters or from being murdered in my sleep.
So there are 15 activities that I'm GLAD the government plays a role in.
