What people need to understand about Wuthering Heights, is it ISN'T a love story, like people think, it's a story about REVENGE. Heathcliff and Cathy grew up together, loved each other, considered themselves to be one soul-one person. Cathy's brother Hindley degrades Heathcliff to the point where it becomes impossible for Cathy to marry him, so she marries another, wealthier man. (Edgar Linton.) Heathcliff runs away, and amasses a great wealth. He comes home, and the revenge begins. Hindley has become a bankrupt alcoholic. Healthcliff purchases his home (Wuthering Heights) and then torments Hindley until he drinks himself to death. He hates Edgar--not ONLY because he married Cathy, but because he feels that Edgar can't possibly love Cathy as much as he does, and as much as he feels she deserves. He takes revenge on them by marrying Isabella, (Edgar's sister--and HEIR) He and Isabella have a son together, who is sickly. Cathy and Edgar have a daughter together. After Cathy's death, Heathcliff pretty much holds their daughter hostage ,and marries her to his son. Then he has them sign over all their property (Thrushcross Grange) to him. He brings down both families.

Heathcliffe marrying Isabella LInton is his revenge on both Cathy and Edgar for marrying; Heathcliffe hanging Isabella's dogs when she tried to defy him; Heathcliffe usurping the Earnshaw home and causing Hindley Earnshaw's downfall and ultimate daeth as revenge for the way he was treated by Hindley as a child; and ultimately, Heathcliffe's own revenge on himself -- starving himself to death following Cathy's death

The novel may as well have been "Heathcliff's Revenge!" He revenges himself on everyone! The whole book is nothing but revenge!
