If you took the hard drive 2 1/2" out of one laptop and put it into another the system would be unstable caused by the drivers loaded from its original system unless you reformatted and started from scratch. It would also invalidate any guarantee you have.

Most laptop hard drives are of the 2.5 inch variety, and that is the only metric you need, other than determining if it is IDE, EIDE, or SATA.
Brand name and size is not an issue.

they are all 2.5 inches but some (older) are IDE and others (newer) are SATA connections on them. IDE hrd drives will not fit into a SATA hard drive slot and vice-versa.

they are not all the same size if you are changing a 100gb sony with another sony with the same capcity as the 100gb then they might fit -should do
