Though I wasn't even born yet--nor were my parents in the beginning of this time period--I would have to go with The Roaring Twenties through the 1950s. So much went on--partying, prohibition, The Great Depression, World War II, the baby-boom, the beginnings of Las Vegas, new inventions, new ideas in psychology and psychiatry, the beginning of credit, women being able to stay home and raise their own children...so much more.

I think that the 20s must have been a blast! The 30s and 40s were darker times, with the Depression and the War--but people seemed to have really stuck-together through these devastating times. When it got to the 50s, the US was a prosperous nation, new homes were affordable, and a new politician (the first born in the 20th century--and the first Catholic) ran for president of the US--and won. Space explorations began.

If you can go with only one short time period, I think I would make it the 20s.

My personal favorite part of the 20th century was the Bicentennial celebrations in the US in 1976. The country had seemed so divided for so long over the social upheaval of the 1960's, the Vietnam war, and more recently, the further disillusionment with the government over the Watergate scandal.

But with the Bicentennial, it seemed like we were all able to reconnect with our history, what it meant to be American, and there was a sense of patriotism that returned generally.

The 1920's

I loved that decade. The art, novels and poetry, the fashion, and the sense of hope and joy. Not to mention the craziness with Prohibition and mafia. It sounded like a cool time to be alive.
