The only real cure is practice in front of small groups and then increasing the audience size.

Actually, there are groups that exist for that. I don't know exactly how they're called, but they're there to help people with lack of self-confidence and that kind of fear...
Or else, you can always bring notes with you not to forget.
Some people say to imagine that people watching you are naked, but I doubt it can be usefull.
Else than that, I know I had that problem as a kid so I was asking to go first to have time to prepare and get in front some time before the presentation, just to feel the place and get the best out of it.

I had that same problem. You have to visulize your speech and feel confident about it. I mean totally confidant. What helped me:
1 i practiced my "speech" over and over until i felt confidant and knew what i was going to say. I used to record myself until i liked what i was saying. While i was practicing i would visualize i was actually at the place i was going to speak. I have even heard of some people setting up stuffed animals and such to help them this.
2) It also helped not to look people in the eye. Once i made the "eye" contact, that is when i my heart would start pumping and i was not foucsed. Keep your eyes moving. Do not focus on 1 person.
Good luck

Start by "speaking" in front of your parents, siblings or friends. A key part to being confident is knowing your topic. The best thing is to take a speech class. You'll be critiqued, but you'll also learn not to say "uh", "um", "you know", "right" etc. Start small (small groups) and continue till your comfortable. Some people never lose the fear of public speaking, but they learn how to overcome their fear adn do it anyway.

By starting with a small group possibly one or two. Then teach a small class on a subject you have researched extensively. By knowing your subject you build your self confidence and that's a foundational start. Standing before a large audience unprepared is a death sentence. So know your subject, most of the people will not have a clue about your subject which puts you in the drivers seat and them in a learning mode. I love to learn something new and your audience does also.

Join Toastmasters and learn. They offer an excellent little form and assistance to folks who need practice speaking to people in a formal setting. They have very reasonable weekly fees, a few dollars.
They also have a good text on the subject. Look in your regional phone book.

The best way to lose a fear of public speaking is to frequently talk to yourself in the mirror. Once you're confident about your speaking abilities, then you should have no reason to fear speaking.

Picture the audience in their underwear is a common answer. But you should really think about something that makes you feel good or comfortable. Go to your happy place....I like to think about the room being filled with hot porn stars...but that's just me.

by sucking it up and doing it.
its going to happen, everyone has to do it eventually since school is a *****..
but look on the bright side, no one listens anyway!!
thats right, your just talking to the teacher, everyone else is thinking about the giant joint they will be smoking after school, or how many shots of jagger they will drink before driving home.
