They want to serve their country and no one forced them to join the army, if they die, they die with honor fighting for what they believed is right.

Like it or not we are the superpower of the planet, and the leaders for democracy, plus what happens on the other side of the world affects us here all the time, so we can not ignore anything happening anywhere because in the end it WILL affect us here positively or negatively.
As for Iraq, never mind if we should or should have not gone in...."we broke it, we own it" now...we are responsable for the outcome of that mess, and we better get it done and leave it "fixed", and not run away like cowards, because that will only buy us peace in the short term, BUT in the long term the image of a USA that is unwilling to fight to the bitter end will bite us in the behind bad!! the bad guys who wish many "bad ills" on us (to put it mildly) will see that as a green light to bring the fight here, to hurt us here, since hey we would have shown we lack the spine to fight to the end, and will run the minute things go bad! If in their shoes I would be doing the same thing.

Good question... I wouldn't join the army myself but at a guess...
A sense of patriotism. A genuine belief that that country does pose a threat. A genuine belief that they are helping the people from that country to overcome tyranny (rather than subjecting them to a different tyranny, which might be the case). Because it's a job, they're good at it, and they have no intention of dying.
Was your question in any way inspired by the Levellers song "Another man's war?" The dying soldiers mother "wonders at it all, just in whose name did these brave young heroes fall? and how many more are gonna answer their call? They're gonna fight, fight and die, in another country's war; they're gonna die for a religion they didn't believe in at all; they're gonna die in a place they should have never been at all... no, never been at all..."
If not you should look it up, it's a great tune...

I can't understand the people on here saying that the army was sent there "to protect their own country". You have GOT to be kidding? It's obvious to everyone with an ounce of common sense that Iraq had been crippled by years of sanctions and wasn't a credible threat to anyone in the west, let alone the world's only superpower.
And comparisons with WWI and WWII are simply ridiculous, Nazi Germany was a military juggernaught and a genuine threat whereas Iraq was already on its knees.
There may or may not have been other reasons for the invasion, but to "protect the USA"? Please!
Going after the terrorists who were responsible for 9/11 I can certainly understand, but instead valuable military resources that could have been used for this were used to invade a country that had nothing to do with it, allowing real terrorists to move into Iraq and cause chaos. Why?
The zealots can thumb my answer down all they like, it doesn't change the truth.

To Pay back Uncle Sam for all the freedom you enjoy!
Nobody forced these people to join the army. They weren't drafted.
All I keep hearing these days is how people joined the military to have a job, and get their education paid for. Well...yeah, that is a perk, but you do know what the Army is actually for, right?

lots of reasons... my brother is in Iraq now, and im enlisting here soon & since our president is committing 20,000 more troops im sure ill be going... But people join the Army for training, paychecks, and as an act of providing for the country. I think in order to join you need to have a want to protect your country & maybe you need money for college it's basiclly win& win. And who says we shouldnt be at war with them? thats a matter of your own oppinion, we are doing what our leader has decided to do.

for one not everyone who joins the army dies and two not everyone shares your opinion. and a lot of people joined the army long before we were even involved in a war. the army provides people with great opportunities. they can actually feel proud of themselves for protecting out country...what do you do?

Yes, lets all not join the armed forces and not protect out country or it's interests. Nothing like throwing open the doors and letting someone march on in and take over because you have no armed forces.
Not that I'm saying war is a good thing. We can no longer afford isolationism even though, IMO, lots of the world should just bugger off and take care of itself.

In other countries is usually where other soldiers die. I don't think that you would enjoy having a war breakout on American soil. Soldiers are going to die---that's part of the business of being in the military.

I'd rather have people sent to other places than be able to watch the war from my deck. Also, there is a sense of helping people that is incomprehensible to a lot of people but to a lot of people who serve in the military is a way of life. And they are sent to places where civilians need all the help they can get, believe it or not.
Judge the government all you want, but respect the troops.
